Mt. Misen

Mt. Misen is the highest mountain on the island (535m). Since Miyajima was known since ancient times as being a sacred island where gods dwell, Mt. Misen has been virtually untouched by humans, leaving intact a unique ecosystem of rare plants and wildlife in their natural habitat. For this reason, the entire mountain has been designated as a national natural monument.

There are three routes to the summit of Mt. Misen: the Daishoin Course, the Momijidani Course, and the Daemoto Course, each of which takes about one and a half to two and a half hours (the Momijidani Course is closed until Wednesday, March 31, 2021). At the top of the mountain, there is an observatory where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Miyajima, and on a clear day, you can even see the Shikoku mountain range. There are also various shrines, including the Misenhondo and the Reikado, which are objects of worship that attract many tourists. If you are short on time or worried about your physical strength, we recommend using the Miyajima Ropeway, which will take you to the top of the mountain in about 13 minutes.
