Takehara TownscapeConservation Area
Known as “Aki’s Little Kyoto,” the Takehara Townscape Conservation Area is a tourist spot where you can see the old streets of Takehara City, which has prospered since ancient times. Lined with old houses and warehouses that are over several hundred years old the area has been selected as a national important traditional building preservation district. Once you step into the district, you will feel as if you have taken a step back in time to traditional Japan.

The old houses in the Takehara Townscape Conservation Area are fitted with characteristic wooden frames called “Takehara lattice. The designs of the wooden frames vary from simple geometrically shaped patterns to cut-out designs of animals, and each building has its own unique Takehara lattice. You can also see the local cats that are loved by the people in the preserved area. Some of the local cats are famous, such as Soseki-chan, who has been appointed as the head of the Hiroshima Prefecture Alleyway Sightseeing Section.
